Map of the Earth’s Vegetation

Twenty-five percent of the earth’s surface is covered in varying degrees of vegetation (the other 75% being oceanic).  The NASA/NOAA Suomi NPP (National Polar-orbiting Partnership) satellite carries the VIIRS (Visible-Infrared Imager/Radiometer Suite) sensor which is able to collect remote sensing data about the intensity of the earth’s vegetation.

SATELLITE MODEL CAN COULD HELP PREDICT LANDSHLDE IN REMOTE AREAS

Researchers at the University of California, United States, have developed a model using satellite data on rainfall, topographical features of slopes, and land cover — and by testing the model on a dataset of previous landslides say it predicts these historical events reliably and could be the basis of a real-time, global landslide prediction system.
